Euro 2024 LIVE: England face major fitness dilemma as Italy icon robbed at gunpoint | Football | Sport

Gareth Southgate bizarrely bemoaned a lack of midfield options after England drew with Denmark.

The Three Lions boss insists he has no natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips, one of the best performers at Euro 2020.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been tried in a central position alongside Declan Rice but the more natural right-back has looked uncomfortable.

Asked about the Liverpool star, Southgate told the BBC: “We know it is an experiment – we don’t have a natural replacement for a Kalvin Phillips [type of player] – but we are trying some different things.

“At the moment, we are not flowing as we would like, that’s for sure.”

Phillips has struggled for Manchester City and latterly on loan at West Ham, failing to make the squad for the tournament.

Southgate also opted against calling up the experienced Jordan Henderson and Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount, who has struggled with injuries over the past year.
