How to clean a duvet without a washing machine – no effort method kills germs quickly

Cleaning a duvet can be difficult as most as far too big to fit into a washing machine, but there is a simple way to help keep it hygienic.

Lynsey Crombie, TV’s Queen of Clean, has shared that her effortless cleaning method to wash a duvet is to simply hang it out outside.

On Instagram, Lynsey said: “Want to wash your duvet but it doesn’t fit in your washing machine? Don’t force it in as it could break your machine!

“Airing your duvet outside is a much easier, quicker and more natural way to clean it rather than putting it in the washing machine.

“Putting your duvet outside can revitalise it in many ways. The warmth of the sunshine can help restore the bounce and fluffiness of your duvet, which can gradually fade over time.”

Hanging up your duvet outside can help remove any musty odours and the sun can kill some bacteria, but will also help whiten it if it is looking discoloured.

Sunlight can act as a natural bleach due to the ultraviolet rays which can break down stains and naturally lighten white fabric.

All you need to do is hang the duvet outside on a sunny day for a couple of hours to help give it a “fresh clean feeling” and then spray it with a fabric refresher.

Lynsey said: “Give it a spritz with your favourite fabric refresher. The wind will also help re-fluff your duvet and the sunlight is a brighter and natural disinfectant.”

One curious cleaning fan asked Lynsey in the comment section what type of fabric refresher to use, and she replied: “At the moment I love the Marks and Spencer fabric refresher but I make my own too.”

This simple cleaning tip will help get your duvet clean while also whitening and fluffing it up so it looks brand new once again.

In the comment section, many Queen of Clean fans were amazed by the results and some people also spoke about their own experience of trying this hack.

One user said: “I do this on really sunny days to duvets and pillows. I don’t spray anything. Just flip after a few hours and let the sun do its magic.”

Another person wrote: “This is brilliant! I don’t want the fuss of taking [a duvet] to the launderette so I’m going to try this next weekend.”

Someone else commented: “I have a thick double king and had no idea what to do…I tried this and it’s come out like a treat!”
