How to make ‘perfect’ poached egg in under 1 minute

Poached eggs are a favourite weekend dish, whether that’s for breakfast, brunch or even select dinner dishes. But, if you want the “perfect” poached egg in record time, one TikTok creator and cooking enthusiast recommends ditching the pans for another method.

Emily Scott, who shares her breakfast recipes and ideas to TikTok on the page @whatiateforbreakfast, says her method is an easy way to ensure you get the best poached egg. However, she says there is one important step you must not miss out.

The recipe creator says you do not need to use the hob or even a pan to create her poached eggs. Instead, she makes hers in the microwave and says they are the “perfect quick breakfast”.

She begins by greasing a small microwave-safe dish and then cracking a large egg into it.

Emily says you can use multiple small ramekins if you want to cook more than one egg at a time.

Next, boil the kettle and pour in enough freshly boiled water until the egg is completely submerged. This is where her top tip comes in.

In her TikTok video, Emily explained: “Carefully prick the egg and white with a cocktail stick, skewer or sharp knife. This helps to prevent the chance of the egg exploding so don’t skip this step.”

She recommends cooking your egg for 40 to 45 seconds, keeping a close eye on the egg at all times. However, Emily does note that the length of cooking time may vary depending on your microwave.

She said: “Depending on the power of your microwave and how many eggs you are cooking, you may need to cook for a few seconds less or longer. If they are undercooked, try adding an extra five or 10 seconds at a time until the whites are cooked but the yolk is still runny.”

Once the eggs look as though they are cooked to your liking it’s time to remove them from the microwave. You should place the eggs on a piece of kitchen towel to absorb any excess water.
