Shoezone to close another store in crushing blow to shoppers

Shoezone is renowned for its low prices with most of its stock costing just £13 on average.

But the brand will soon axe one of its high street branches when it shuts its store in East Ayrshire, Scotland.

The Shoezone shop on King Street, Kilmarnock recently announced plans to pull down its shutters by placing a ‘closing down’ sign in the window.

It is understood that a final closing date has yet to be announced by the retailer, though it is not thought to be part of a spate of closures previously announced by the retailer.

Last year the brand revealed plans to open “big box and hybrid” format stores in place of its original, smaller formats.

A total of 13 Shoezone branches shut down in 2023 while 63 stores shut down in the year to October 2022.

The latest unit to be earmarked for closure is under the Burns Mall umbrella – the only shopping centre in Kilmarnock town centre.

It comes shortly after it emerged that the shopping centre had been put up for sale. The mall was listed with a hefty £2.85million price tag.

If Kilmarnock’s main shopping centre is sold, the retail landscape could be transformed for decades to come with a range of options open to potential buyers.

According to the Daily Record, less than half of the 31 Burns Mall units are currently occupied as retailers continue to experience difficulties.

While the news of Shoezone’s departure comes as a shock to some, it’s not the first time the brand has tried to exit Kilmarnock.

In August 2019, the retailer announced plans to close the same King Street store before performing a U-turn and remaining open for business.
