Gardening guru Anya Lautenbach, known online as @anyathegardenfairy, has shared her expert advice on the best time to prune hydrangeas to prolong their life and vibrancy.
“Timing is crucial!” Lautenbach said. She explained that the ideal moment to cut and dry hydrangea blooms is between late summer and mid-autumn, once the sepals have started to fall away and the flowers feel slightly dry to the touch. Cutting too early, she warns, means the petals retain too much moisture, making it difficult to dry them properly while keeping their natural beauty intact.
Once harvested, there are a few techniques gardeners can use to extend the life of their blooms. One simple method is hang-drying.
Lautenbach advises cutting the stem, removing any leaves, and suspending the flowers upside down on a drying rack or hanger. This allows the petals to gradually dry while maintaining their natural shape.
Another method, suitable for gardeners willing to invest a little more, is using silica gel.
By placing the flowers in an airtight container and covering them with silica gel, the moisture is slowly absorbed over the course of a week, preserving both the colour and form of the blooms.
Lautenbach points out that while adding a small amount of water may seem counterintuitive, it can help retain the vibrancy of certain hydrangea varieties before the drying process begins.
Hydrangeas are not only prized for their striking colours, from soft pastels to vivid blues and pinks, but also for their ability to enhance gardens and interiors long after cutting.
