Taylor Townsend’s US Open run is officially over. Ranked No. 1 in doubles, she stormed into the last 16 of the singles event, upsetting former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva en route.
The end of her match with Ostapenko went viral after the Latvian confronted her and claimed Townsend had “no class” and “no education”. Ostapenko has since apologised.
Alongside her partner Katerina Siniakova, Townsend finished runner-up in the women’s doubles event, and will leave New York with her head held high.
“I feel like this tournament changed my life in terms of exposure. You know, the obvious. I mean, my social media followers have quadrupled. It’s crazy,” she said.
“Even Novak said something to me. Jannik said something to me. Like, ‘Hey, like, you played really well, keep going, keep going’. Everyone was watching.”
