‘We’ve supplied hotel towels for 130 years—here’s how they are kept soft and fluffy’

With hotel towels being constantly washed, it’s hard to understand how they are kept so white and fluffy. However, Richard Haworth, who specialises in white hotel bedding and towels, has shared all the secrets. They’ve supplied hotel towels and linen for over 130 years. Whilst starting with a high-quality fabric is crucial, the experts said hotels employ a combination of specialised laundering techniques, carefully selected detergents, as well as advanced drying methods to ensure their towels maintain that “plush, luxurious” feel.

The pros said: “How hotels achieve and maintain soft, fluffy towels involves a series of deliberate steps. Beginning with high-quality cotton towels renowned for their softness and durability, hotels employ specialised laundering techniques. This includes the use of gentle, fabric-safe detergents and minimising the use of fabric softeners to prevent residue build-up, which can compromise softness over time.”

The expert said hotels also incorporate natural additives such as vinegar and baking soda during the wash cycle, which keeps towels “soft”.

When it comes to hotel towels, whether washed with commercial equipment or at home, choosing the right detergent is crucial for maintaining their quality and cleanliness.

The experts said it’s best to avoid detergents with “optical brighteners” for coloured towels, as these can affect the colours over time.

They added: “Conversely, white towels benefit from detergents containing optical brighteners, which enhance brightness and maintain their pristine appearance.

“Proper storage of towels is also essential to maintain their fluffy texture and prevent them from becoming flat over time.”

To keep them fluffy, store them in a well-ventilated area where they can fully dry between uses. If possible, avoid overcrowing towels in storage spaces, as this will compress the fibres and reduce their fluffiness.

Folding towels neatly or rolling them rather than stacking can also help maintain their structure.

They added: “Additionally, storing towels away from direct sunlight and moisture helps preserve their softness and prevents mildew.

“By implementing these storage practices, hotels can ensure that their towels remain plush and inviting for guests, enhancing their overall experience.”
